Eden had never considered herself the chasing type. People came to her. Father’s aides, trainers, lawyers, suitors with shiny resumes and fake shiny smiles. She’d learned early to stay still and let the world orbit. Chasing meant caring. Caring meant vulnerability. Vulnerability meant exploitable.

And yet here she was, running.

She’d started the moment she left the lobby after that meeting with Patrick. She’d told herself she was just walking off the adrenaline, just taking Phoenix for a loop around the grounds. But every path she chose bent toward the same question.

Where was Jerard?

His cottage was empty, with the door locked and curtains drawn. The boardwalk was full of strangers and locals, but none of them was the tall, broad-shouldered resort manager she was looking for.

She checked the staff break room, the gym, and even poked her head into the maintenance shed. Every time someone looked up expectantly, she pasted on a smile, asked some innocuous question, and moved on, the knot in her chest tightening.

By the time she made it back to the cottages, she was breathless and no less empty-handed.

“This is ridiculous,” she muttered, scrubbing a hand over her face. “You met him yesterday.”

But somewhere between the ferry, lobby, body on the beach, dog collision, Ferris wheel kisses, bonfire turned lethal, attack on the sand, and then the scrupulous tower meeting, somewhere in the whirlwind of their hours spent together, her sense of time had stretched and compressed until “yesterday” felt like both a minute and a month.

She stopped outside his cottage again, staring at the closed door.

Maybe he was inside, ignoring her knock. Maybe he needed space. Maybe he’d decided she was a walking, talking hazard sign and the best thing he could do for his town was to keep his distance.

She wouldn’t blame him.

The thought still hurt.

Phoenix pressed against her leg, woofing softly. Daisy sat at her feet, head cocked, picking up on her agitation.

“I know,” Eden said to them both. “I’m being pathetic.”

If she were honest, it wasn’t just the loss of a potential ally that had her gut twisted. She needed him beside her when she faced the inevitability of a meeting with her father, needed his steady belief in this island when the men upstairs started talking about “acceptable losses.”

But she also needed…him.

The man who had looked at his hometown from a Ferris wheel and talked about it like it was sacred. The man who had brought her to his friends’ bonfire, ready to fold her into a circle that had clearly been built over years. The man who had stood shirtless and scarred on the beach, humiliation bleeding from every line of his body, and whose first concern had still been everyone else.

She wanted him to care about her the way he cared about Royal Bay—doggedly, stubbornly, with a loyalty that didn’t flinch when things got complicated.

Which was absurd.

She didn’t get that. Not from men. Not from anyone.

Still, the wanting wouldn’t go away.

By late afternoon, the island heat had settled into a heavy haze that slowed everything down.
